This is my Jim Jones tattoo by Kelly Doty. If you don’t know, Jim Jones was a cult leader in the 1970’s who manipulated more than 900 followers into committing suicide. Before anyone gets worked up, let me be clear that I am in NO way glorifying him. I got this tattoo as a warning. I feel like in today’s society, opinions become followed with cult like, blind dedication. Whether its politics, religion, science or anything else, people tend to dig their heels in, ignore facts, avoid calm discussions and absolutely alienate or hate anyone who disagrees with them. “It’s my way or the highway.” In my opinion this is very dangerous, no matter what side of the debate you’re on.

Many of us have heard the saying “Don’t drink the Kool Aid.” That saying is based on Jim Jones and the Jonestown Massacre. Now, there’s always at least one internet geek who has to state “technically it was Flavor-Aid not Kool Aid” and although I’m proud of you for flexing your knowledge of true-crime history, the saying is “don’t drink the kool aid.”  It also make a much better visual image with the dead Kool Aid guy from the commercials.
